22nd Trofeo Angelo Massimino

Civita Castellana

17/18/19/20th December 2010.

As in previous years Stuart and Robyn travelled the day and a half by road to this four day working event organised by Luca Massimino in Memory of his father Angelo. The journey to the event took them through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland and finally into Italy. On each day dogs are assessed working birds in their hunting, pointing and retrieving. The exception to the retrieving is the Friday, which is a no shooting day in Italy so instead each handler ‘salutes’ the bird as it flies with a starter pistol.

Our arrival at just after midnight in the town of Citta Di Castello(PG) near to our ‘Italian retreat’ was memorable on this occasion as on exiting the E45 motorway we were met by the local Carabinieri with pistols drawn who initially took us to be some kind of foreign travelling criminals. The mood soon changed when the van was opened to reveal four friendly Spinoni.

When the sun rose in the morning the Umbrian weather was a little cold but clear. I deal to give the dogs their first exercise for 2 days.

View from the fields up to the house.

We arrive a few days before the event to give the dogs a chance to adjust to the local conditions.

It is a great opportunity to visit our friend Stefano with his Spinoni and have a days hunting and catching up with news.

Waiting for Woodcock.

We return to the house for the night and get the fires lit. At 600 metres in the winter, it gets quite cold in the evening.

Maybe I should have cut that one, but by just feeding it into the fire all evening I didn’t have to get more logs.

We woke to a different snowy landscape. We were setting off for the trials that morning which is an hour and a half drive down to just north of Rome. Snow chains were a must to drive the 15 minutes down the mountain.

We arrive at the hotel ‘Rio Coverino’ The building is converted from its original purpose which for use in potash mining which still goes on locally.

The hotel is set in its own farm land and hunting grounds employing a team of game keepers. It’s a very picturesque location with ancient ruins on surrounding hilltops.

Silver investigates scent where a bird had been earlier.

Sanjika Kamuzu points a partridge and Judge Sig. Bianconi positions himself for the shot.

Not too good off road. A tow from fellow trialler Antonelli.

Snow started falling at lunch time of the second day. We wondered if the following days trial would be effected. The next morning there was no sign that there had been snow the day before.

Day 3 and Kamuzu points another partridge at the top of a steep bank. He flushes the bird which is shot by the judge Sig Massimino and lands beyond brambles on the other side of a track. The photo above right is Kamuzu returning with the retrieve up the thickly brambled bank.

Kamuzu delivering the partridge to hand.                                                      Next to run is Sanjika Nyika. She goes on point in the bottom of an old mine excavation.

Nyika on point. Unfortunately the bird had moved about five metres to the right and as she moved onto it it flew without being held on point, not good enough!
